The Mahwah Township council has upped the police presence in and around each school in response to an October threat that detailed a student “shooting up” a middle school this coming Friday.
Councilman James Wysocki said while armed officers regularly frequent the schools, Mahwah Township police will be more active through the end of the week.
In October, a student made a threat “to shoot up” Ramapo Ridge Middle School and specified a date of Feb. 23.

After an investigation by the Mahwah School District and the Mahwah Township Police Department, the student was removed from school for the remainder of the year.
Superintendent C. Lauren Schoen notified the public of the threat on Friday.
Several other school districts throughout the state have taken serious precaution to threats after a school shooting on Feb. 14. in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.
On Thursday, the East Brunswick School District unanimously agreed to have armed police officers at all of its schools throughout the entire school day to ensure the safety of students and staff, a press release said.
Wysocki assures that the town of Mahwah “has this covered” and that the teachers are trained to handle any dangerous incident.
